Being in agriculture, we understand the importance of the environment. We know we need to do what we can to ensure the apples turn out nearly flawless, but at the same time be aware of all the creatures that help to bring that apple to fruition and the healthy soil that feeds them.

We have planted native grasses and wildflowers near some of our larger orchards. These are no spray zones that provide a sanctuary to our bees and beneficials. It provides food and cover and a beautiful sight for the eyes. Right now in early June it is quite literally buzzing!

Two of the nine packing sheds packing apples for Riveridge Produce use solar panels to power some of their facility. These solar panel farms are quite the juxtaposition from the stark packing building and the orchards set behind. This is the perfect blend of modern innovation with old world agriculture.

Nothing wasted. All the stems, leaves and bruised apples that are left over from the apple packing process go into a compost bin. Here you see sliced apples from the quality control process. Each day apples are packed, hundreds of apples are pulled to check for bruising, pressures, starches, etc. These residuals also head to the bin – either to go to a local cattle farm for feed or to be turned into black gold compost.

These are just a few of our sustainability practices to help support our environment. #worldenvironmentday
